Check the List

It’s shocking the difference a checklist can make. Follow the list and your patient has a shot at life. Miss a step or two along the way and your patient dies. It’s that simple. You don’t have to be a doctor, though, to leverage a list. You can apply this painfully practical lesson to absolutely every project in every field.  See Dr. Atul Gawande: The Checklist Manifesto: How to Get Things Right, Lecture at Dominican University of California, Atul Gawande’s ‘Checklist’ For Surgery Success, and Lowering Medical Costs By Providing Better Care.

  1. We used to get complaints from customers that our engineers were ‘reading the manual’ while performing maintenance work (and were therefore obviously unskilled and lacked knowledge). We had to explain (lots of times, sometimes unsuccessfully) that they were obliged to follow the right checklist, regardless of their experience, so that nothing was missed. It was part of their procedures. Even so, some customers were not happy. Sad but true.
